55D23L for my Hilux – can I get away with a cheaper brand?
I've got a 2018 Toyota Hilux that I use for light work duties – hauling tools and materials around the city – and the battery is starting to show its age with slower cranks and the occasional click when I try to start it after it's been sitting over the weekend. I've been doing some shopping around and I'm honestly shocked at the price range for a 55D23L battery, with some places quoting nearly double what others are charging for what looks like the same specifications on paper. I'm not exactly rolling in cash right now, so I'm tempted to go with one of the cheaper options, but I've got this nagging feeling that there's got to be a reason why some batteries cost so much more than others. I've heard that the cheaper ones might have thinner plates or lower quality lead that doesn't hold up well in the heat, which means they could die after a year instead of lasting three or four years like a good quality one should. A friend of mine who runs a small fleet of Hiluxes told me that he's tried all sorts of batteries over the years and he's found that you generally get what you pay for, but he also said that if you drive the car regularly and don't let it sit for long periods, even a mid-range battery should last a couple of years. The thing is, I do a mix of short trips and longer drives, so I'm not sure where I fall on that spectrum. I'm also wondering if the installation quality matters as much as the battery itself, because I've heard horror stories about people who had their battery swapped at a random shop and then had issues with the terminals coming loose or the hold-down bracket not being tightened properly. I've been told there's a place in Karama that does Quality 55D23L Battery Installation Karama and actually takes the time to clean the terminals and apply anti-corrosion grease, which sounds like a small thing but apparently makes a big difference in the long run.
