What Makes Children’s Book Covers Stand Out?

A good children’s book cover should give you an idea of the story without trying to explain everything. The character, title, colours, and typeface usually need to work together, especially when the book is sitting beside dozens of others. I’ve noticed that overly detailed covers can lose their impact when viewed as small online thumbnails. When looking at children's book covers, I’d check both the full-size design and the thumbnail. Which catches your eye first?
